Over Medicated America

I have gained a lot of experience the last 2 years working with a lot of people with problems. Some physical, some psychiatric, some with addictions, and some just lazy. If you do not know I work at the Salvation Army emergency shelter or in other words a homeless shelter. You name the drug, there is probably a current client that is prescribed to it.

There is a high percentage of people who are veterans and I have not met one that is not prescribed to some form of anti-depressant. Many of them are old Vietnam vets and saw some fucked up shit, but upon talking to some of them on a personal level, they say it just makes them worse. Many of those same veterans also have an addiction, i.e. alcohol, when really all they need is support around them. Since America was so split whether the U.S.A. should even have sent troops there, many soldiers lost their everything, which is friends.
There is also high percentage of people with addictions. For whatever reason doctors seem to try to treat them by giving them other highly addictive drugs. Mostly drugs to treat bi-polor/psyzophrenia or also many different kinds of pain killers. Those drugs seem to knock the shit out of them and they do not know what they are doing or did. For example, I was at Bennett O'Reilly's with Dust, K, our "spouses" and some others when a client of mine came up to me and asked; "DO you know where to get any?" I was like; "What?" He responded; "You know, do you know where to get any?" I was think what the fuck does he want pussy, weed, crank, I was assuming weed. I just told him "no" and started talking to K again. I had to work the next morning and I was going to ask him about it. Because first of all clients are not suppose to be drinking and secondly, why would you even ask someone for weed, who could discharge you for just asking for it. Well he wasn't around so I asked this other client, who was with him, what the deal was with him. I told him what the guy asked me and the dude was like "what?" He told me the other guy was all messed up on tramadol, which was recently prescribed to him, and wasn't even drinking. I saw the dude later that day so I asked him. He didn't even remember seeing me. Tramadol is a drug that many use to "get knocked out" at night before bed so why does a doctor have this guy on it all day?
You know I really do not know much about medicine and what exactly it does but I do know that often times it brings people down. Not down from some coke or meth high but down from a somewhat happy, content state. If I were to have to stay at a homeless shelter, I would think I would be depressed. That doesn't mean I will stay that way after I were to leave and have a home of my own. I try to stay away from all medications including the otc headache/pain relievers. I think when I get old and really need to take a pain reliever, I won't be all jacked up on some strong shit and I won't be a zombie walking around, chewing on my tongue. Just maybe an aspirin a day will suffice. Right now at work there is so many meds some with big ass bags of them. It seems like it is a full meal for some just to take there meds. I am talking handfuls of meds. Why, doesn't it seem like they might be counter productive and maybe just dangerous? I don't know I am not the expert.
And then there are the people who just take meds to get fucked up. Man, what the fuck are they thinking. I have seen friends take like 4 vioctin and then just start pounding the beers. I have had nights where I really do not drink much because I want to be able to get them help if they really fuck themselves up and need to go to detox. Where do they get them from? Prescription drugs are a very hot commodity. People trade prescription drugs for other prescription drugs, weed, coke, meth, $, etc. And other people steal it. I knew of a man that many said was the kindest, humorous, and most generous man they have ever met. He got really sick and NEEDED to take a bunch of meds. Well some fucking punk kids broke into his house shortly after getting released from the hospital, beat him up and stole all of his meds. The guy never recovered from that and died within weeks. All so some kids could get all fucked up.
I am not saying that everyone who is taking meds shouldn't be. I do understand there are conditions that if you didn't take meds, you either wouldn't have your life or it would be intolerable. Also after an injury or a surgery I can understand taking some pain killers. I just think that many people have too many meds and some that are on meds shouldn't be.
Is America over medicated? In my opinion, yes. Next time you visit your parents, just look inside their med cabinet and I guarantee you find some. Do they necessarily need those meds? Probably not.

Thanks Doc Markey, the kids body was just not reacting to the tramadol in a good way. It made him walk around like a zombie. Maybe he was taking other shit but who knows. I agree with the whole A.D.D thing. I also think kids are over diagnosed with it and my kids will not be one who is, even if they are distracted. Instead of giving drugs, give young students an interesting way to learn where they won't be distracted. I am not claiming to be an expert on medication but I just see to many pills in a day and most of it really doesn't help them at all.
